If you don’t know his work check him out at http://www.jeanmichelberts.com.

He is a good friend and of the key reason that got me into photography. When I first saw his work, I had so much emotion. I was surprised that one photo could communicate so much. I went to many of his exhibits and to see his photos in huge prints is mind blowing.I’m now working with him on a major tutorial where he will show his workflow from beginning to end, from shooting to the full post processing. It should be coming out in the next months.

The other night I was in “La Defense” to change my Iphone 5 that wont turn on anymore and it was the only place near Paris where I could get a genius bar appointment fast. I cannot stand the idea of leaving a couple of days without my Iphone. I know I’m sick, but that’s me. I love that phone. Anyway I arrived with my scooter I saw the reflexion of the sun against the big buildings and the clouds and I just came out of doing of portrait shoot – I had all my gears with me. !

I got an ND filter 1000 out (there was a lot of sun), which btw I bought for almsost nothing on Ebay and did some long exposure. I then decided to retouch them in the spirit of Jean Michel.

I don’t know if he would like it, but I did, try it if you have tall nice building aroud you with a lots of glass windows, a tripod and an ND 1000 filter you will fall in love !

In this tutorial I will show you how you can add a lot of drama by adding clouds to a boring sky without using selections but by using Blend modes.

The steps are :

1. Develop your photo so that the buildings are well textured and the sky is very bright.
2. Add a layer with your clouds and put this in multiply mode.
3. use a mask to make the effect more subtle based on your taste.
4. Dodge and burn the photo to add even more drama.
5. I show you some finish touch as freaking amazing details and vignetting.

My wife and me decided to go to the Dead Sea which is only one hour away from Jerusalem. After about 20 minutes of driving this is the type of environment we had, very desert and very hot around 38 Celsius. Too hot for me coming from the cold paris :-)

But before going to the Dead Sea, we decided to got to an Oasis called Ein Gedi, it’s funny because once you park you car in the middle of the desert, you walk about 20 minutes and it gets greener and greener and you come across several waterfalls, here are some of the photos :

After playing around with the waterfalls we went finally  to the Dead Sea. This is an amazing adventure, the colors were fantastics. it is the sea that has the most salt in it. You can almost seat in the water, you can just lay down and rest, you dont go deep. But one thing I didn’t know that it is forbidden to put your head under the water as the salt is acid it burns them. I love putting my head under the water and i did. Boy that was painful I was blind for a couple of minutes and ran to the shower. If you go there don’t do it, it’s not worth the pain, but apart from that it was a great experience. It’s a unique feeling floating without any efforts.

Finally I decided to make a huge panorama of the whole scene, as the sun was going down the color and the haze was amazing

As I was going back to my war I saw the sun coming behind the mountains and thought this could be a some cool photos :

I came back from Jerusalem and Israel a couple of days ago and started retouching my photos, here are some of the first photos :

This is a view of Old Jerusalem, the western Wall is behind there somewhere. I climbed up to a hill in front so that I could catch a broader view. It was one of the only night where we had some clouds in the sky. Blue sky is really a pain to make dramatic photos, so I jumped on the occasion.

This the closest gate that we had from our Hotel, the Damas Gate. I shot this very early in the morning. The sky was boring so I added a cloud texture sky to the whole photo to give out a more drama look. This is where we came in into the Souk.

We had the idea to go into the Souk very early in the morning before any tourist, so that we could get some interesting shots of empty Souks, which are usually loaded with tourists. We found the place to be very safe.

This is a photo of the western wall in Jerusalem. Thanks to Photoshop I got everybody out expect one kid. Liked that composition.It’s always loaded with lots of people. A very spiritual place.

After receiving some comments on my podcast N°41, I discovered the use of stack modes, a faster way to erase tourist in an auto fashion. The steps are :

1. Take a scene where there is tourist, (that should not be hard to find) if possible on a tripod take at least 5 photos, with the same exposure in manual mode, enough photos so that every spots are empty on at least one shot.

2. Retouch the first photo and synch that retouch on the rest, best using Lightroom.

3. Open as layers in Photoshop, so that all the photos are into one Photoshop file.

4. Select all layers and right click and choose create smart object.

5. Go to layers – smart objects – Stack Mode – Median.

This should take most of them out and then you can use the clone and healing brush for what has been missed, check out the rest of the technic on that episode :

To fake long exposure without an ND filter or a tripod do the same step then above and at step 5 select Mean instead of Median and voila !

2. Shoot in raw, manual mode to have the same exposures on your photos. You can shoot them in landscapes so as not to have too many photos to take.

4. Retouch the first photo to your liking and synch that settings with the rest using Lightroom.

5. Make individual retouching on each photos.

6. Merge them in Photoshop CS 6.

7. Use the wide adaptive angle to correct the panorama.

8. If you want to print it make it super sharp using the unsharp mask filter.

These are DNG files, meaning that the corrections are embedded in the files itself. When you open them in Lightroom you can see the settings that have been used, including brushes and graduated filters to correct the image. You can duplicate them as virtual copies, so as not too loose the original retouch, reset  and try to re produce the effects yourself. This is a great learning experience. Each files has a tutoriel on my you tube channel www.youtube/com/cmoeu if you need to see how the photo was corrected.

These files are some of my best photos ever and I think can really help to learn Lightroom. If you have a private license you can print them or use them for your personal uses, if you have to use the image for professional uses such as for your company website, brochures, books, or magazine cover etc… You need to have the pro license.

it is so easy to make an app for anything. 

The service is top, I could't go on for hours and I get no money for saying that.

In this tutorial I show you my workflow to erase tourist on a photo or elements, I will cover examples of :

The workflow then is to :

0. One key point is to have a lots of photos with the tourists at different places, and to make sure you have the same exposure for each shots, so best is to shoot manual on a tripod.

1. Import all the photos into Lightroom, retouch the first to your liking and synch that setting onto the rest.

2. Open “as layers in Photoshop” all the photo in Photoshop CS 6, that way you have one file and each files is on it’s own layer.

3. Always work with the top layer first, create a white mask, and turn off and on the visibility of the top layer to see if a tourist disappear on the layer below, if yes paint on the mask over the tourist with a black brush 100% opacity, he will disappear. Do that for all the tourisst and merge the two top layers. Continue to go down until you have done all the layers and gotten the best out of each layers.

4. For some tourist that could’t be taken out with the technic above you have to use the stamp tool.

5. You can also try using the patch tool with the new content aware fill option.

6. Use the spot healing brush tool to erase electric cables.

7. Do the finish retouch either in Photoshop CS6 or Lightroom to give it a final look.

Last year, we where in Versaille castle and he hand held his camera and started taking the same photos of the same corridor over and over again. There was a lot of tourists. 

After a while on each of the photos that he had, the tourists where at different places. He then used layers in Photoshop to erase all the tourist. Amazing !

This app is amazing, I have been playing around with it since I saw a demo at Photoshop world. This is my first composite made with it. It is hard to believe that you can make such complex retouching with an Iphone !

 

Here are the steps that it took to make this composite :

 

  1. 1. Use the quick select tool to select the car and the floor.
  2. Inverse the selection to select what is behind the car and press delete.
  3. refine the selection using the “refine selection brush”
  4. Using the lasso tool get the rest of the above side walk deleted.
  5.  Insert the cloud photo on it’s layer in multiply mode. (photo taken a few minutes earlier)
  6. Duplicate that layer to make it stronger.
  7. Use the fade option (sort of a mask with a gradient) to have the cloud layer a bit less strong on the bottom of the photo. This part is what I like best :
  8. Create an empty layer in overlay mode and with a brush dodge and burn the photo to add drama !
  9. Create a color balance adjustment layer to give a little cool color cast.

 

Doesn’t that feel like doing some regular photoshop ?? All that on an Iphone and the UI is amazing for the space we have. Off course the result is not perfect, but I think it is amazing to do that on such small device.

I have got to find a way to show you with a video and record a tutorial on that.

If you don't know +Corey S Barker you have got to check out his blog, he is an amazing teacher and specialise in 3D, composites and movie posters.

I also did a typography classe with +Scott Kelby as I'm really bad at that. The guy as usual is a genius, I learned so much in one hour it's incredible. things like how to make a title for a book, a presentation or a logo. What are the main rules how to align words together. Beautiful !

The Ipad version has over 15 tutorials included that will get you through it, amazing. (The Iphone one did not)

For example here are a few things that I did on my Iphone 5 on the photo below.

1. Create a duplicate layer and put in overlay mode to boost the contrast.
2. Create a duplicate layer in Product mode to darken the whole photo, then put a fade to get that effect just on the sky.
3. Saturation adjustement layer.
4. Create a blank layer in overlay mode and dodge and burn with a white brush and all that on an IPHONE 5 !

The subject  was how to self publish books. 

I have self published a lot of my tutorials "books" more like apps that you can see here :

There is very little text and mostly videos. (that's because I only know how to speak in front of camera and I cannot write at all, but want to improve, but tell no one :-)

So I was very interested by the topic. 

The 4 hours flew like nothing, it was really interesting and really got me the urge to write more and publish more. The whole seminar was on their book APE how to publish a book wich you can find here :

I got so much little tricks here and there, and I'm now reading the book. It really gives you everything from start to finish if you want to start publishing your own book. You really take control. I'm already read a third of the book and it is very easy to understand, each details of the workflow is really taken up, you feel that a huge research has been done for that result.

You also get free downloads of a word and in design templates to make your own book, for me that worth a lot of money.

I often get ask what are the best spot to shoot in paris ?, so I used 500px stories to make a list of all my best spots and when you click on the map you get the exact GPS position on the google map.

The photo above I just a couple of days ago, after a week of bad weather and rain the sun came to say hello for a few minutes and I was right in front of the Windmill of Montmartre. so I did a little pano as I could get the whole scene in one photo, like how it came out.

All photos were taken a few seconds from each other

Photo 1 The Long exposure
I use an ND 1000 filer for this photo and got and exposure of 64 seconds at F13 to get that silky look in the water and the fuzzy clouds.

Photo 2 HDR
I bracketed three photos 0 -2 +2 and used Photomatix to merge. A little recipe, I retouch the photos a little bit in Lightroom first before going into Photomatix.

One exposure and a standard retouch in Lightroom 4 as you can see regularly on my Youtube Channel :

J'ai adoré ce livre. Il a été écris par un amis, et je l'ai lu un peu au début pour lui faire plaisir, et j'ai été "pris" par l'histoire. Je suis super fan de la série Games of Throne et j'adore ce genre d'univers. 

Il a su créer son propre univers avec des personnages hauts en couleurs.

1. Shoot bracket photos as you would for HDR -2 0 + 2.

In Lightroom or Camera raw :

2. Retouch the normal exposed photo for the buildings.

3. Retouch the under exposed photo for sky.

4. Retouch the over exposed for the water (silky water)

5. Open all 3 raw files in one Photoshop files and blend them gently with mask and brush of 40 %

there was a lot of persons in and outside of the Museum. The sky started to be interesting but I don't like to take photos when there is tourists on my photos. So I took out an ND 1000 filter, put my camera on a tripod at F 18 with a 180 second of exposure (3 minutes), all the tourist were gone !

I also like a lot the effect that it does to the clouds. 

Retouched in Lightroom 4 and then I used a couple of filters of Color Efex Pro. I think I will do my next podcast on how I retouched that photo.

I have done a lot of long exposure, but always around 60 second range, then  I realized that most of the master on the subject, would do 3 minutres average. This is my first try at that long, I like it :-)

Also wanted to make a color version for once and not black and white.

I have been using Color Efex select for a while with about 28 filters and I upgraded to the full version not long ago. 

I love some of the filters and how you can do some HDR look with a single exposure photo.

I decided to not miss it when I heard that it was going to snow a lot again last night.

As I live 15 miles from Paris, I booked an hotel next to the Eiffel Tower to be able to get up early in the morning.

I stayed at the Hôtel Ares, beautiful 4 start hotel and probably one of the closest to the Eiffel tower : http://ares-paris-hotel.com/fr/

The hôtel has a amazing view on the tower so I could check how it looked with the snow.

Me and my wife got up at 7:00 am, knowing the the end of the sun rise was around 8:30 am, I wanted to make sure I could catch the tower with the city lights still on. 

once we had the tower covered we went to different places in Paris. I will make a post for each.

Après avoir raté les photos de Paris vendredi soir. Je me suis mieux organisé et ma femme et moi avans réservé une nuit d'hôtel à l'hotel Ares proche de la tour eiffel. 

C'est un superbe hôtel trés proche du champs de Mars :

L'idée était de pouvoir prendre le champs de Mars et la Tour Eiffel sans trop de trace de pas. 

On c'est levé vers 7:00, sachant que le levé de soleil était à 8:30 pour pouvoir prendre quelques photos avec les lumières de la ville encore allumé. 

On c'est ensuite rendu dans d'autres quartiers, voir les articles suivants.

In this episode we will correct all the lens distortion of a panorama and then create a selective black and white photo using Lightroom 4 tools. 

I will also show you double processing with Lightroom 4 to get a creative effect.

It is now called the Hotel Collectionneur.

It's a huge hotel and I'm re doing all their photos.
