HDR ? no DRI ! Dynamic Range Increase ?!?

Posted by on Feb 9, 2013 in blog | 29 Comments

This is a technic that I love for shooting urban Landscape where the dynamic range is a challenge.

1. Shoot bracket photos as you would for HDR -2 0 + 2.

In Lightroom or Camera raw :

2. Retouch the normal exposed photo for the buildings.

3. Retouch the under exposed photo for sky.

4. Retouch the over exposed for the water (silky water)

5. Open all 3 raw files in one Photoshop files and blend them gently with mask and brush of 40 %

You will see a full demo on how to do this on my next podcast on monday !

As usual +Serge Ramelli you've created a fantastic image. I thoroughly enjoyed last Monday's tutorial and am looking forward to this weeks tutorial. While I like HDR to some degree, your DRI is much better, even my wife commented on how natural looking this latest image is! Thanks for sharing!

Hi +Lammert Doddema its not an HDR, our expert creates this images with a hand-on "HDR" work. and he define it as DRI ;-)

+Stephen Darlington Yes a bit more but not that much, I do not do HDR anymore since at least 2 years, I either do that technic or try to get the best out of one raw file, check out the video on monday for the entire workflow from A to Z

Looks very natural. Does it not take a lot longer than using say Merge to HDR? +Serge Ramelli

What I men by natural is that it doesnt have that HDR look, plus this was really an awesome sunset

Even with HDR one might blend in the sky as the sky is often problematic with HDR.

Natural? mmm ok if that is the way yo want to call it. anyway cool photo.
I thin the advantage is that here you can decide what to blend and waht to leave from the back image. right?

with HDR you use a software that does it all for you, with DRI you do with your hands ! more natural !
